Transformer is an electrical device that transforms the voltage at one level to the volatge at different in ratio of the nurmber of turns in their prinary and secondary windings.

Sometimes they are used for electrically isolating the two circuits. It can be hence defined as an electrical device that connects two electrical circuits through magnetic circuits.

on the basis of voltage level theyvare of two types:

step up : Steps up the voltage

step down: Step down the voltage

1:1 transformer: In some electronic circuits for electrical isolation this transformer is used.

There are some other also like power transformer used in transmission system which works 24 hours at almost full load. There are distribution transformemrs also which we can see nearby our homes to step down supply from 11kV to 400V phase to phase.
